Cascade Pass Overlook

When the first snows come to the Methow Valley located below the eastern slopes of the North Cascades the quiet stillness can be deafening. Snow clings to the Ponderosa pines and the scene seems to paint itself. It’s a beautiful place anytime of year but this moment was special. Acrylic on stretched canvas.

Winter Morning in the Methow Valley

Fox in Winter Aspen

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are famous for their glorious forests of oak, spruce and aspen. Thousands come to see the aspens in fall color each year. But when the snows come, leaves fall, and crowds grow thin, the lowly fox remains hunting small prey in winter. Acrylic on stretched canvas.

Forest streams are part of the wonder of Creation. This painting captures the moment when the viewer comes through the forest shadows to find a stream falling through a gap in the rocks to land in a pool below. See the water dance in the sunlight from the sunrise that has already bathed the meadow above in light. Acrylic on canvas panel.

Wenatchee River near Leavenworth, Washington

The Wenatchee River runs 53 miles southeast from Lake Wenatchee past Leavenworth, a wonderful little Bavarian styled mountain village in the Cascades of Washington state. This painting looking NE captures the river on its way to Cashmere before emptying into the Columbia River just north of the city of Wenatchee, WA. Acrylic on canvas panel.

Along the Yellowstone River, Paradise Valley Montana

There are many wonderful views of Creation along the Yellowstone River. Here is the river with trees exploding in fall color as the clouds lift revealing the mountains beyond. From Paradise Valley in Montana. Acrylic on canvas panel.

Walking in a forest one will come across wildlife paths used by any number of creatures common to the area. If you are quiet, you may glimpse mule deer browsing where the sunlight penetrates the canopy to enable new grass to sprout. Stand quiet an enjoy the peaceful nature of these special creatures of the forest. Acrylic on canvas panel.

Forest Glade at Sunrise

Jeremiah 17 speaks of the tree by the stream that sends out its roots toward the water so that it does not suffer from the drought. This golden tree of early autumn reminded me of that passage. Its boughs are bent toward the sunlight and the roots reach to the water. I used a palette knife extensively in the painting. Acrylic on canvas board.

A Tree by the Water

When walking through the woods toward the sunlit meadow I spied a Northern Flicker leaving its perch to escape my approach. These medium sized woodpeckers feature black scalloped plumage at the top of their speckled breast but in this case identified only by its white rump as it flew away. Acrylic on stretched canvas.

Kalaloch Creek flows to the Pacific on the southwest coast of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula within the Olympic National Park. This color study is a view of the Pacific at sunset where the shallow stream winds through the sandy beach in the foreground from left to right to eventually find the ocean. The slow moving stream made a perfect reflection of the sunset painted clouds above. Acrylic on canvas panel.

Kalaloch Enters the Pacific

Many family vacations were enjoyed on the Pacific Coast in Oregon and Washington. This captures that moment when after a long drive we ran to receive the ocean’s greeting at sunset. The trail through the dunes was so inviting as our first sight was the crashing waves rolling toward the beach. I love visiting the ocean and feeling the calm wash over me.

Split Rock is a prominent sea stack located on Rialto Beach near La Push, Washington, in Olympic National Park. It is a massive structure that is actually split down the middle from top to bottom. This view captures the sunset creating a silhouette of the larger near half that looks like a giant sea lion stretching toward the sky. Acrylic on canvas panel.

The Texas Hill Country is beautiful, especially at sunset. Here bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush display their riotous color near the expansive live oak trees common to the area. Acrylic on wood panel.

The Sedona Desert located in the Coconino National Forest in Arizona is a great place to enjoy the sunset. As the waning light touches the edges of the many kinds of cactus and rock formations you may even spy a coyote calling to its mate. Acrylic on hardwood panel.
